Well, Janie wasn't actually my foster dog but I cared for her here for two weeks after her surgery and again when her foster mom went on vacation so I feel a special bond with her. Her story is so amazing I wish to share. Janie was found as a stray after the spring tornado's in Alabama. Her owners were never located and the search was on for a rescue to take her. She was 3 yrs old and had cataracts in both eyes and was blind. Lori who runs the rescue wrote of her story in her newsletter. A wonderful family heard about her and offered to pay for this expensive surgery. Janie was taken to an eye specialist and her cataracts were removed and lenses implanted. My friend and fellow foster mom Shelly drove her all the way to Minnesota for this surgery. She described how excited Janie was immediately after surgery as she had 50% vision. In the days that followed, her vision improved to 80-90%. Janie was such a dear..... a wonderful dog. She needed to spend another couple months in foster care as she needed frequent eye drops, eye specialist visits, and was on restricted activity. She was very lucky her foster dad was a vet and could keep a close eye on her. In October she will go to her forever home and has a wonderful life ahead.

Janie the evening after her surgery.
You can see Janie's white eyes from her cataracts in this photo.Prissy was rescued from a Georgia shelter. Prissy has had lots of luck, good and bad. She was rescued from the shelter, that was her first lucky day. Her rescuer adored her and hunted for a rescue to take her. Prissy was to go to one of our best foster homes but then the foster became ill so she stayed at a doggie daycare for several weeks. We all adored Prissy and she had just the best temperament you could imagine. As soon as I was able, I brought her here so she could be in a home. She received an application but when I took her for her vet check, they found a hernia. She had to wait again. Next, her incision became infected. Poor girl had to wait again for her own family while she healed. Finally, after several weeks, she finally went to her forever home another lucky day for her. She is called Izzy now and has a boy and a girl. She loves her people so will be so happy with lots of playtime and snuggles. Thank you to a special family for waiting for this dear girl. Have a happy life Izzy.
Lori who runs the rescue was notified of a little shih tzu mix that needed rescue. The little gal was pregnant. A sad reality at these overcrowded shelters is the fact that early pregnant dogs are spayed. Lori responded, please do not spay her, we will take her pregnant. She arrived Sunday October 9th. Peek-a-Boo seemed fine Monday morning. As the morning progressed, she became lethargic. We noticed some brown drainage from her. Lori took her to the vet. The vet told Lori she needed to go to the local emergency animal hospital. At the animal hospital, it was determined the pups had died a few days prior and were causing an infection that was taking Peeka's life also. She was beginning to become septic. The emergency vet induced labor and four of the pups were delivered. The following day she required a spay. There were still two pups in her uterus, despite being induced the night before. She was released from the hospital Tues. evening and came to my home. Peeka was just wiped out after all of this but after a couple of days, her energy began to return and her delightful personality emerged. Having Cricket, I have always been drawn to longer muzzle dogs but we just fell in love with her little face. A couple who had a purebred Shih Tzu met her and another rescue purebred Shih Tzu that was just stunning. They loved her personality so much, they choose our little mix breed. She will have a wonderful life. She has a southern girl name now..... Honey Pie. Have a happy life Honey.
Well, only two hours after Honey Pie joined her new family, I headed to the doggie daycare and picked up another. Lisa who owns the daycare will "hold" dogs until foster homes become available. This is such a great service she provides. The goal is to get all dogs into a foster home but at least when a transport is coming this way, a couple extra can come and get out of a shelter and be safe. I met Honey on Sunday and noticed the daycare was a bit much for her. She was a shelter rescue and described as shy. She had stayed at an Alabama foster home for a month and was coming out of her shell. A shy dog was a first for me. Her Alabama foster sure did some great work since I really wouldn't call her shy, just careful. She wanted to be with people and loved gentle affection. I put on her petfinder site that she needed a quiet home, no small children that might make her nervous. Putting recommendations on dogs can make the time to find a home much longer for these dogs but we do want a good fit. Amazingly, within days an inquiry came in for her and the home visit confirmed it would be the perfect home for her. She now has two young adults (19 & 22) and their parents to care for and spoil her. Someone will be home with her most hours of the day which is soo wonderful for her. My heart really ached when she left as I knew it would be hard for her a few days to transition.....but the week she was here she made wonderful progress and I don't doubt she will do it again. She is on her way to a happy ever after. Have a wonderful life Honey.
